English Literature Summary

This course is very suitable for students that are enthusiastic and thoughtful readers of fiction and enjoy discussing, debating, analysing and writing about novels, plays and poetry. Students will study texts from a range of historical periods and the modern day. The study of literature at A Level encourages students to broaden and deepen their understanding of the world around them and to consider the relevance of fiction in a range of contexts. Developing knowledge of how writers write and how readers might respond through a range of literary, political and social lens’ is central to the course, as is the study of two fascinating genres; tragedy and crime writing. There is also the opportunity to read widely to select texts for a personal study (NEA). All universities hold this qualification in very high regard because of the transferable skills required to be successful.

How you will study

The course combines essays, wider reading, presentations and discussions and students are encouraged to participate fully.

Component breakdown

Component 1 – Aspects of Tragedy – 40%
3 essays in a two and a half hour exam.

Component 2 – Elements of Crime Writing – 40%
3 essays in a three hour exam.

Component 3 – Non exam assessment (NEA) – 20%
Two 1,500 assignments, one on a prose text and one on a poetry text, which relate to the Critical Anthology.
