A-Levels: Psychology, Maths and Chemistry (2006-2013)

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to work in a prison, using my interest in rehabilitation to motivate, empower and instil change in prisoners. I chose to complete an A-Level in Psychology at Friesland; its application to everyday life was interesting and the Criminal Psychology module in particular furthered my desire to follow my chosen career path. I then read Psychology as an undergraduate at the University of Birmingham, where of course, my favourite module was Forensic Psychology. Wanting to learn more about the forensic field, I completed a Masters in Forensic Psychology at Birmingham City University.

I knew my academic qualifications would help me to obtain employment in a prison setting, however gaining practical experience was paramount in demonstrating I also had the transferable skills required. Therefore during my studies I volunteered to support adults with acquired brains injuries, teenagers with eating disorders/difficulties and children with Autism, as well as being part of a support group for offenders in the community.

Since University I have spent the last three and a half years working as an Interventions Facilitator, firstly in a prison in the Midlands and now in London. This involves me conversing with prisoners to assess which intervention programme would best suit their risks and needs. I then deliver the programme, on a group or individual basis, supporting them to identify and manage their risk factors, set pro-social goals and challenge their beliefs about offending. This requires patience, empathy, critical thinking, clear communication and teamwork. It can be challenging; whether there is resistance from prisoners or restrictions to the prison regime, but still lends itself to be extremely rewarding and fulfilling when the prisoners’ engagement is meaningful. I feel very fortunate to work in such an interesting and empowering job and I am grateful that the academic opportunities and support at Friesland have helped me gain a job that I truly enjoy and am proud to do.
