Biology Summary

Biology is arguably the most accessible of the three sciences. Not because there is less to learn but because it is relevant to every aspect of your life. An understanding of the principles of Biology allows students to appreciate not only how our bodies work and how diseases stop them working, but also the fragility of life on Earth. Once you grasp the full significance of Biology, be prepared to look at the world in a new light because someday a Biologist may change it beyond recognition. Even the world of business is turning to Biology. Apparently, the behaviour of Ant colonies gives a detailed insight into the activities of large global companies. High finance uses evolutionary models to predict the movement of share prices. Biology related activities represent the largest concentration of wealth in the world.

How you will study

The Biology A Level course explores the wonders of everything living. It begins with the study of life at cellular level, then moving towards how the organ systems work systematically in multicellular organisms and eventually how diseases can affect the normally functioning of organisms. As the course progresses students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the intricate detail of the biological process in all living organisms.

  • Module 1 – Development of practical skills in biology
  • Module 2 – Foundations in biology
  • Module 3 – Exchange and transport
  • Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease
  • Module 5 – Communication, homeostasis and energy
  • Module 6 – Genetics, evolution and ecosystems

Assessment

Biological diversity: 2 hour 15 minutes written paper– 37% of total A-level

Unified biology:1 hour 30 minutes written paper – 26% of total A-level

Practical Endorsement in biology: assessed throughout to develop practical, analytic and mathematical skills.

Many students who have studied Biology are now practising doctors, vets or dentists; others have gone on to study Marine Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmacology and forensics. The top universities and employers are looking for a science A Level as an indication of analytical skills. As everyone becomes aware of climate change, there is also a growing interest in degree courses in Environmental Sciences. Biology A Level is an essential entry requirement for all these courses and many more, so is a favourable course to choose.
