Chemistry Summary

From medicines, foods, fuels, plastics, fertilisers and fabrics chemistry is all around us. Defined as… the science that deals with the properties, composition, and structure of substances, the transformations they undergo, and the energy that is released or absorbed during these processes.

Whilst studying chemistry at Friesland you will start to understand the nature of atoms and molecules and the way they react together to produce useful products. The course covers organic and inorganic materials, looking at their properties, synthesis, reactions, analysis and uses. From studying organic compounds identifying key functional groups and the properties of compounds to synthesising and analysing in the lab. Identifying and recognising trends in periodic groups and to studying material properties and they link to their re-world applications.

The chemistry course will link chemical theory with practical analysis through investigation and problem solving, making links with both the substantive and disciplinary knowledge. Studying chemistry at Friesland is both a challenging and rewarding course.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE Grade 6 or higher in Combined Science or Chemistry
  • GCSE Grade 5 or higher in English Language and Maths

How you will study

A content-led approach. A flexible approach where the specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of chemistry. Teaching of practical skills is integrated with the theoretical topics and they’re assessed both through written papers and, for A Level only, the Practical Endorsement.
