Drama & Theatre Studies Summary

This A Level course allows you to study a practical, artistic and intellectual subject. You will participate in various exciting live performances and workshops and you will study play texts in a range of different styles and periods, allowing you to understand more fully the history of theatre.

A Level Drama has a mix of practical and theoretical work over the two years you will study it. This course will push you to be the best performer you can be but will also push you to understand and question theatre, live performance and written plays. You will explore a variety of different practitioners and immerse yourself in this art form where you can experience being an actor, a director and an audience member.

If you are enthusiastic to perform, you have a desire to improve on confidence and social skills and you have an enjoyment of live theatre, then this could be a course for you.

How you will study

A Level Drama & Theatre Studies has a mix of practical and theoretical work over the two years you will study it.

You will explore a variety of different practitioners and immerse yourself in this art form where you can experience being an actor, a director and an audience member.

Component breakdown

Unit 1 – Practitioners in Practice
Students will study two contrasting styles of theatre and explore two professional practitioners’ work. They will study a text of the centre’s choice, create and perform in a devised play and complete two written pieces of coursework.

Unit 2 – Exploring and Performing Texts
Students will study and perform in a scripted performance from a published play chosen by the centre.

Unit 3 – Analysing Performance
Students will study, theoretically and practically, two contrasting set texts, chosen by the exam board. They will then be examined on these through a written paper at the end of Y13.

Unit 4 – Deconstructing Texts for Performance
Students will study, theoretically and practically, a set text chosen by the exam board. They will then be examined on these through a written paper at the end of Y13.

If you would like to pursue a career in the performing arts industry or study drama at university, A Level Drama and Theatre Studies provides an excellent foundation. The skills you learn are transferable across a broad range of subjects and careers. Whatever you choose to do in the future, you’ll find that the skills and knowledge you learn on this course will help. We have had excellent success in the past with students gaining places at some of the top drama schools and conservatoires and going on to have extremely successful careers in performing arts related fields.
