Extended Project Qualification Summary

The EPQ enables students to experience what it will be like to undertake a university style dissertation. It involves lots of independent, self motivated research and the organisational skills to produce a written project that is 5,000 words and accompanied by a very detailed production log. The real appeal of the EPQ is that students can select a subject or topic that really interests them and that they genuinely want to spend time studying. Not only is that a valuable experience but it provides excellent content for a personal statement; many students decide to select a focus that links with a chosen degree or career pathway.

Many universities value the EPQ and some will make lower offers based upon a strong performance in an EPQ because the process is similar to higher education. Most employers value employees who can manage their own time effectively, are organised, self motivated and capable of seeing through a challenge from beginning to end. Students have on occasions been asked to discuss their EPQ at interviews for apprenticeships and university.
