Sociology Summary

Sociology is the study of societal behaviour. Sometimes described as the history of today, studying Sociology will change the way you see the world and encourage you to question our roles within it.

How you will study

Utilising multiple perspectives of inquiry, we examine the various trends and patterns that emerge within society and ask questions regarding the causes of them.

  • Which groups consistently under-achieve in schools and why?
  • How are family patterns in society changing and what are the implications for this?
  • What causes crime and how should we go about preventing it?

Component breakdown

The Sociology A Level course examines the following units:

Unit 1 – Education and research methods
Unit 2 – Family and households
Unit 3 – The Media
Unit 4 – Crime and deviance
Unit 5 – Theory and methods

At the end of Year 13, students will sit three two-hour papers covering knowledge from all eleven units. Each paper is equally weighted.

The subject is useful for many careers and courses including – Teaching, Nursing, Law, Politics, Journalism, TV, Drama, Leisure, Sport, and Police Management etc.

Previous students are currently employed as Solicitors, Police Officers, Social Workers, Teachers, and Nurses. It is an academic subject accepted by all Universities, including Oxbridge.
